TORNADO Swirl Hat (needle knit converted to loom) tutorial/pattern, Free

tornadodone1I found this pattern, called Swirl Hat (Ravelry link) on Rav and decided I wanted to make it on the loom. It’s super cute. I didn’t do the decreases for the top because I was being a bit lazy, but I converted the main pattern for the swirl, and knit that. I used my 72 peg Bufanda 3/8″ loom, and the pattern called for 72 stitches to be cast on. Any loom with a peg number that is a multiple of 8 will work, and I have a small head, so I recommend more pegs (or bigger gauge, peg spacing). Here’s how I did it.

What you need

  • A loom with a peg count that is a multiple of 8. This pattern is worked in the round. I used 72 pegs.
  • Stitch markers for every 8th peg. I used 9.
  • About 100yds of yarn of your choice. I used worsted.
  • A tapestry needle and crochet hook.

I’d say this pattern is advanced beginner or intermediate due to moving pegs around.

Cast on a multiple of 8 pegs using the cast on of your choice and join in the round.

Place a stitch marker on every 8th peg (1, 8, 16, etc, and include the last peg before peg 1) This isn’t necessary, but it makes life easier.

tornadoagainBrim:

Row 1-8: Knit 1, Purl 1, all the way around

Body:

This uses 2 rows you repeat. I repeated them 25 times for a total of 50. My head is very small. A hat made on the 36 peg Knifty Knitter loom fits me perfectly. So I have a kid sized head.

jan14frontRow 1: K2, YO, K4, K2Tog (8 pegs) repeating all the way around. The stitch marker will be on the K2Tog (knit two together)

Row 2: Purl all

It takes a bit for the pattern to start showing.

Row 1 Explanation

tornadoinstruct

A diagram of the 8 peg repeat in row 1

tornado-jan15This involves moving pegs around. So here’s what you do:

  1. Move peg 7 to peg 9
  2. Move peg 6 to peg 7
  3. Move peg 5 to peg 6
  4. Move peg 4 to peg 5
  5. Move peg 3 to peg 4

Now, peg 8 will have 2 loops on it, and peg 3 will be empty. Knit the first two pegs, yarn over (bring the yarn in front of, but don’t wrap around) peg 3, knit the next 4 pegs, and knit peg 8’s two loops as it were one. Start again on the next 8 pegs.

tornado2.jpgRepeat rows 1&2 until the hat fits. I often just try it on, loom and all. Cast off using the gather/drawstring method. To do this, wrap the working yarn around the loom twice, and cut it from the skein, and attach it to a tapestry needle. Take the needle, and bring it up and through the loop on peg 1, and remove peg one from the peg. Repeat this on the rest of the pegs, until there are none left on the loom, and then tighten. Weave in your ends. There may be a small hole at the top of the hat, so take the tapestry needle and sew it together, and tie it off on the inside of the hat. Admire, you’re done!

5 hats finished and one gemstones wrap

I made this little hat on the 31 peg knify knitter loom. I changed colours a couple times. I’m donating it. 4 hats to go!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Next is the Gemstones wrap from The Invisible Loom. I did about 12 repeats and made a small scarf. I need to fix some of my edges.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Right now I’m making a shawl on the CinDWood afghan loom. Casting on 60 pegs and decreasing each row. I might make it lacey. I think I will. I just need some stitch markers! I’m so sick of using yarn and tying it. But I’ll show pics when its done, and share a tutorial.

9 Hat Project – 4 out of 9 hats finished, and I’ll teach you how to make them

I’ve got 4 hats finished, 3 done on the Knifty Knitter 36 peg loom and one done on the Boye 31 peg loom. I’m doing pretty good! I’ll show a pic of each and a short tutorial underneath it. I’ve got 5 to go, ones already on the loom (the second for the 31 peg loom) and I’m doing well! I might make more than nine, we’ll see. Or some gloves and socks. I’m using spare and scrap wool I found in my big container.

First, the garter stitch rainbow hat.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was a simple hat to make. I used the garter stitch shortcut and made it in about an hour. I didn’t like my cast on, so I knit 4 rows and made a mini brim that you can’t really see.

Basically, the entire hat is done in the garter stitch, and you can add a brim if you like. Gather bind off, sew the top together, done. All knits are e-wrap knits, and I did it on the 36 peg loom. It can be done on any loom.

Next, the purple and gray bumpy hat.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This hat is a bit more complex and requires 2 different colours of yarn or wool.

All knits are e-wrap knits and this was done on the 36 peg loom.

I did the rib stitch for the brim, which is Knit 2, Purl 2 in the round, in the first colour (the gray). This works out well on the 36 peg loom, but if you’re using a loom with odd numbers, just knit or purl the last stitch. Whichever you prefer.

So, I did an e-wrap cast on and did the rib stitch (k2 p2) until I thought it was big enough.

Then I changed colour, and knit (e-wrap) one row so the colour change isn’t as noticable.

Then I purled 5 rows, and switched back to the first colour.

I knit 6 rows, in e-wrap, and then changed colour.

Go back and forth between colours, knitting 1 row and purling 5 for the second colour (which creates the bumps) and end on the first colour, knit 6, and gather bind off. You’re done!

Now for the diamond lace stitch hat done on the 36 peg loom. All knits are e-wrap knits and you can use any size round loom. I always knit my hats in the round.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The colour is off in these photos, its a gray blue. It’s not as gray as the first one, and its not as blue as the second one.

Cast on in e-wrap and purl a row.

Then do the rib stitch (k2, p2 in the round) for as large as you want the brim to be.

The repeat for the pattern is knit one row, figure 8 stitch the next row, end on a knit row, and gather bind off.

The fourth hat is the first on the 31 peg loom, and has a pom-pom. It can also be made on any size loom.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I don’t have a pic of me modelling it because its too small.

Knit about 12-14 rows and then fold the yarn up and make a brim.

Knit one row

Purl one row

Figure 8 stitch one row.

Repeat the knit, purl and figure 8 until it’s at the size you want it to be, and gather bind off and sew, add a pom pom if you’d like, and you’re done!

So those are my first four hats. Enjoy, and go knit!

Two loomed hats for my roommate

I did these today. The neon one is made out of super bulky wool and didn’t take long. I made a pom pom for it as well. The other is hot pink and navy blue, which is hard to see in the pics. Each has a rib stitch brim and they’re all done in all e-wrap. Simple!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

No pattern needed! Straight e-wrap and gather bind off.

Another winter hat/toque with a tutorial

I’ve been on the go today. I made two hats (see last entry for that one). This one I did differently. I was going to use the knit stitch and not-ewrap stitch, but I was being lazy. I think it turned out well.

I used gray and blue yarn, the 36 peg Knifty Knitter (green) round loom and a tapestry needle. The only stitches you need to know are e-wrap cast on, e-wrap and purl.

Here’s the hat, which will be followed by my pattern.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s a bit big and slouchy, but I want it that way. The blue is purled, so it creates a bump. It’s a nice warm hat for what’s going to be a damn cold and snowy winter.

Pattern

What you need

100 yards of the main colour (Colour 1) yarn

50 yards of the secondary colour (Colour 2) yarn

Any size round knitting loom (this is all knit in the round, no seams)

A tapestry needle and knitting tool.

What I did

First I cast on all 36 pegs in e-wrap cast on.

Colour 1 (for me, that is the gray)

Rows 1-12: E-wrap knit

This is the brim of the hat. You’re going to fold the bottom to the top and place one stitch on each peg around the loom and knit over, creating the brim you see at the bottom of the hat.

Change to Colour 2

I change colours by cutting the working yarn and attaching the new colour with a good square knot.

Row 13: E-wrap

Row 14-20: Purl

Change to Colour 1

Row 20-27: E-wrap

Change to Colour 2

Row 28: E-wrap

Rows 29-35: Purl

Change to Colour 1

Row 35-41: E-wrap

Change to Colour 2:

Row 42: E-wrap

Row 43-49: Purl

Change to Colour 1:

Row 50-57: E-wrap

Change to Colour 2:

Row 58: E-wrap

Row 59-65: Purl

Change to Colour 1:

Row 66-71: E-wrap

Now it’s time to bind off. Use a gather bind off to bring the top circle into itself and become the top of the hat. Sew the top closed with the hat inside out. Weave in threads. You’re done! It looks a bit wonky laying on its own, but it looks good on.

Simple winter hat (toque) for my mom, with a pom pom and tutorial

I made this toque (called a “beanie” in the US, but a toque in Canada, where I’m from, pronounced “tooke”) for my mom for her birthday. I’m making her a bunch of hats for the cold weather that just started. I used variegating yarn with burgundy, whites and navy blues. I like how it turned out. It’s cute. I used the 36 peg Knifty Knitter green loom and just knit and purl.

I made the pom pom by wrapping yarn around a tapestry needle on my index finger, sewing through it while its still on my finger, tying the edges together (the starting yarn with the tapestry needle, and the ending yarn that I ran through the ball on my finger) and then cut it off, tightened the knot I made, and then cut the rest of the yarn so it opened up into a pom pom. There are much easier ways to do this, but my pom pom makers have disappeared.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s really cute. My mom and I both have small heads, so I used the 36 peg loom. Any round loom will do.

The Pattern

What you need

About 100 yards of yarn or wool.

A tapestry needle.

A loom knitting tool.

Any size round loom, preferably with an even number of pegs.

Purl

E-wrap knit

E-wrap cast on

Gather bind off

How it’s done

E-wrap cast on. You can also use the chain cast on if you prefer. It doesn’t really matter. All knits are e-wrap knits, but you can use any you prefer for the garter stitch. E-wrap knits are fastest.

Knit 2, purl 2 in the round for as long as you want the brim to be. I made mine about an inch. If you’re using a loom with an odd number of pegs, knit 2, purl 2 until the end, and purl the past peg, then start the next row and knit 2, purl 2 until the end, and purl 1. This is what you would do on a 41 peg loom.

Knit a row in the round. Wrap the pegs and knit over.

Purl a row in the round. Purl each peg by putting the knitting tool underneath the yarn on the peg and then grab the working yarn with the tool, pull it up through the yarn on the peg, take the new loop and replace the old loop with it on the peg. Tutorial here with pics and a video. It seems slow at first, but you’ll get faster as you learn it

This is called “garter stitch” and is used in many patterns.

Keep knitting a row, then purling a row until the hat is the desired size.

Gather bind off (put the tapestry needle through the first peg, move the peg onto the yarn on the needle and pull it off the peg, do the same for peg 2, tightening as you go around the loom so at the end the circle is closed)

Flip the hat inside out and run the tapestry needle with yarn on it through a few times to close the circle completely.

Make a pom pom any way you desire, if you want a pom pom.

Attach the pom pom to the top centre of the loom and sew it on. I had two long pieces of yarn on each side of the pom pom, so I put them on the tapestry needle, pulled through to the inside of the hat with each side, and tied them right a few times.

You’re done!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The finished product. The e-wrap knit 2, purl 2 creates a bit of a wavy edge, which I like. If you want it to be straight, you can use the standard knit on the loom rather than e-wrap, or even flat knit. The brim doesn’t have to be made, the garter stitch doesn’t curl, so you can do the entire thing in garter stitch, but I wanted a brim.

It’s all up to you! Now my moms first hat is done and I’m going to move on to a second for her. Her birthday is coming up soon!

Striped hat with tutorial/pattern

Well, I frogged the sunset shawl/scarf and started working on the Mostly Harmless scarf, from The Invisible Loom. I’ve got 2 out of 24 repeats done, so I took a break and made this hat.

It’s November 1st and it’s snowing out. So I need to make lots of hats!

I made this awesome striped hat in about 2 hours today. Here it is!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Me looking sexy wearing my new, warm, hat.

I just worsted weight wool for this, just spares I had in my stash. I used a 36 peg Knifty Knitter Loom (the green one) but it can be adapted for a 41 peg loom, too. I have a small head! I can almost fit into the 31 peg loom hats. I made my first hat on a 31 peg loom, and it had some stretch, but it fit. I’m child sized. I even wear a child sized riding helmet. Here it is, and yes, it has the pony on the side!

helmet

I got it from Greenhawk in Beamsville. It’s super comfy. I don’t wear it to shows, I have a black velvet helmet for that. I’d get laughed at at shows if I wore my My Little Pony helmet!

Okay, onto the pattern.

What you need/need to know

About 150 yards of yarn, total. I had some scrap lying around. This is a good scrap project.

A round knitting loom of your size of choice, it doesn’t matter. Even pegs are better than odd, but either work.

E-wrap cast on.

Gather bind off.

E-wrap  knit (all knits are e-wrap knits)

Purl

Knitting tool

Tapestry needle

About 2 hours

Changing colours

What I do to change colours is cut the old yard and tie the new yarn to it with a square knot, so its secure, and start knitting with that.

The Pattern

All knits are e-wrap knits

E-wrap cast on all pegs in the round in Colour A (which was the burgundy for me). You can use any cast on you like, but I used the e-wrap one.

Rows 1-6: Knit 1, purl 1, in the round. If you’re using a loom with an odd number of pegs, knit the last peg and continue knit 1 purl 1 from the starting peg.

Row 7: Change to Colour N, which was the black for me, and e-wrap around.

Row 8: Purl around

Row 9-11: Knit

Row 12: Change to Colour A and e-wrap around

Row 13: Purl around

Row 14-16: Knit

Repeat rows 7-16 twice.

Row 18: Change to Colour B and e-wrap around

Row 19: Purl around

Row 20-24: Knit 2, purl 2. If you’re using an odd numbered loom, add an extra knit on the last peg and continue in Knit 2, Purl 2, at the beginning of the next row.

Cast off using the gather bind off method.

Flip the hat inside out and tie the top together. Add a pom-pom if you want!

It’s done!

The finished hat. The black wool has spots of colour in it.

Diamond Lace Hat with Tutorial

I made this awesome hat using a simple technique, and it comes off looking lacey. I used two stitches: the e-wrap stitch and the figure 8 stitch, which I’ll post a tutorial of in the tutorial. Now, here’s what the stitches in the hat look like:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It only took a couple of hours and looks fabulous. Here’s a pic of it on the loom.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I used a 36 peg loom because I have a small head. This pattern can be made on any round loom.

And this is me wearing it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What You Need

Yarn, not much thought. I used about 3/4 of the small ball you see there. I could make very little out of it. I’m not sure about actual yardage, but enough to make a hat that fits your head.

A round knitting loom, any size, any amount of pegs, odd or even.

A knitting tool and tapestry needle for bind off.

The Pattern

Cast on all pegs in the round in your preferred way. I used the e-wrap cast on, but you can use the crochet cast on, as well.

Start by making a brim of your choice. I used the rib stitch, which is knit 2, purl 2, and did that for about an inch. It can be as big or small as you want.

Row 1-12: Knit 2, Purl 2

Row 13: E-wrap knit stitch

Row 14: Figure 8 stitch

Row 14: E-wrap stitch.

Do this until the hat is at the size you desire, and then cast off using the bind off gather method. Finish on an e-wrap row, this makes the bind off easier.

This method is simple. Take the tapestry needle and run it through peg 1, cast off peg 1, then do the same to peg 2, and pull the yarn tight as you go around the loom.  It will gather the hat into a hat-shape and then flip it inside out and tie it off.

Here’s the figure 8 stitch in a video:

Enjoy! And knit on!

Newsboy hat on the loom tutorial

Since my last attempt at a newsboy hat made a hat way too small for me, I created my own pattern and made a new one, in dark blue. Enjoy the tutorial!

The finished product

What you need

41 peg round knitting loom

Knitting tool

Tapestry needle

About 150g of yarn/wool.

Stitches

All knit stitches are e-wrap stitches

Gather bind off

Tutorial

First you have to set up the loom for the brim, which is pretty easy. Put a marker on peg 6, 11 , 31 and 36. I use pieces of yarn.

E-wrap cast on starting at peg 36 and cast on to peg 6, going counterclockwise.

Knit one row, and purl the next with an increase on that side.

Knit the next row, and increase on that side.

Keep doing the garter stitch (knit one row, purl one row) until you’ve reached pegs 11 and 31.

Keep going with the garter stitch, back and forth from 11 and 31 for 6 rows. This will be the brim of your hat.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is what your loom should now look like.

Cast on the entire loom from peg 36. Peg 36 is the start/end of each row. I used an e-wrap cast on.

The “visor” part is knit one row, purl one row for 6 rows, all the way around the loom

.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It should now look like this.

After doing the visor and brim, e-wrap 25 rows.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Use a gather bind off, and flip the new hat inside out and sew the top closed.

Ta-da! You’re done!

The hat that barely fits

I worked on this hat for a couple hours today, and it barely fits. Pissed. I suck. I also broke my favourite knitting loom tool making it. I swear, the yarn I used is cursed. I haven’t made a single decent thing out of it. I’ve started projects with it, never finished them, most of them got thrown out.

Well, here’s the hat. It’s a bit small. I might remake it on a 41 peg loom.
