Ribbed Sideways Toque (Beanie) Tutorial/Pattern By Me, and some more hats, on knitting looms

I’ve been addicted to sideways hats for a big. This is when instead of making it on the round, you make it in short rows in wedges and seam together at the end. Above are 3 different hats, one is called Sidestreet ((the first and last pics) which is a pattern for $3.99 on Ravelry, the other is Vanilla on the Side (the second, third and fourth pics) which is a free, simple and fun pattern on Ravelry, and the final one is Sideways Beanie from the Big Book of Loom Knitting which is very simple and pretty fast.

Sideways Toque: One wedge done

Now for my pattern

What you need: 1/2″ gauge loom with at least 30 pegs, or 3/8″ gauge loom with at least 40 pegs. I used the Spanish loom, the yellow one, with 82 pegs for the 3/8″ gauge, and for the 1/2″ I used the CinDwood 51 peg round loom. You can use a provisional cast on and off if you’d like, I used a crochet cast on, knitted bind off, and seamed it. Stitch markers are a good idea. This should be easy for a confident beginner to any level knitter.

This is not done in the round.

7 wedges, before casting off

Definitions:

K: Knit (this pattern uses the e-wrap stitch, other stitches can be substituted, but the size will differ)

P: Purl

Sl: Slip a stitch (don’t knit that peg, done once every repeat)

PTMM: Purl up to and including  movable  marker

KTM: Knit up to but not including the marker on peg 6 (8)

W&T: Wrap and turn (lift the yarn off the peg, put the working yarn around it like a half stitch and place the original loop on top)

Cast on30 (40) pegs in your preferred choice, do not join in the roundA provisional cast on can be used for seamless bind offs, but you can cast on with the crochet (my preferred), e-wrap or double e-wrap. The first number is for the 1/2″ loom (30 pegs total) the second number is for the 3/8″ loom (40 pegs total)

Put stitch markers on peg 6 (8), 30 (20) and 38 (48)

Repeat rows 1-20 7-10 times based on the size of your head.

Cast off using the method of your choice. I used the knitted cast off then seamed up the back.

Wear, and share!

Yes, you can knit a sweater on a knitting loom

I finished the Weekender Sweater by Kathy Norris. It’s burgundy and tan. It took a couple weeks of off and on working on it. So about 2 weeks total. I used the Loops and Threads 62 peg green (except my one peg was broken, so I only used 60 pegs) loom, and the 38 peg loom (blue) for my sleeves. I used about 1 1/3 balls of yarn, they were big, and almost an entire ball of the accent colour, the tan. I had bought a small ball of that.

The pattern is very clever, easy to knit, and easy to understand. The sleeves were a little difficult because of the way its done (removing stitches, putting them on pegs, making sure the opening isn’t blocked) and when I was using two colours,  it was tangle city! It’s warm, fits me perfectly, I wish I would have made this *before* spring!

A quick update after some downtime

I picked a winner for my shawl giveaway and have their contact information. Sorry to those that didn’t win. Maybe I’ll have a sock giveaway, or a little scarf. I’ll see. I have to make my winners shawl first! (It’s coming along nicely)

I had laptop problems and couldn’t really blog much. I just got my new laptop, its pretty nice, hopefully it holds up. I’m currently working on the Weekender Sweater by Kathy Norris (she’s written quite a few loom knitting books). It’s knitting up quick. I’ll post pics when I have something worthy of posting. It’s in the very beginning stages. So I’ll post pics of projects I’ve done before.

First is my rainbow framed karius. A karius is a little scarf (or mini shawl) made mostly using the knit stitch with very few purl rows. A baktus uses garter stitch (knit one row, purl one row). The bonus to the framed karius is that there are purls at the beginning and end, “framing” the knit stitches, and it didn’t require blocking. Here are some pics. The yarn really makes this project. It was kind of a pain in the ass to work with, but it turned out beautiful. You can see the framing the best in the first pic of it hanging on my chair. No blocking required! I did this on my 51 peg CinDwood loom, using 32 pegs.

Next I did “Just a Little Lace Shawl”, which I’ve made before, but when I did it before I did it with fingering yarn. This time I used worsted yarn, giving it a completely different look. The lace isn’t as obvious, but it’s there. The yarn reminded me of Neapolitan ice cream (the mix of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla in one). I love the yarn, I wish I had more. Definitely going to pick up some more when I can. Here are some pics of the finished project, and a close up of the lace. I did it on my 66 peg CinDwood loom, using 44 pegs.

Last, I have the Maintou scarf that I’m working on. It uses a technique called “Indian Cross Stitch” which takes a bit of time. It’s taking a lot of time to work, but I’m halfway there (in the pic I’m posting, I’m about 1/3 of the way there). It’s by a different designer than I’m used to, but the pattern is easy enough to follow with great instructions on how to do everything. I’m using Ice Cream yarn called “Tutti Frutti”. You’ll also see my Bufanda/Elvira/Spanish loom, the largest (41 pegs at 5/8″ spacing, 82 pegs at 3/8″ spacing) with all of the pegs in it. I’m using 52 of 82 pegs. All the pegs are removable.

That’s all for now! Sorry, I’m too lazy to put links in.. but I will later (maybe). Enjoy my projects, get knitting!
